A small treasure with a thousand years of patience.
Gourd-shaped in Chinese culture is called húlu (葫芦), which sounds identical to fú lù (福禄) — fortune and prosperity. For centuries it has been carried on scholars' desks, tucked into scholar's sleeves, and placed on altars as a quiet wish for good things to come.
This piece is formed entirely by hand using dàqī (大漆) — the raw sap of the Chinese lacquer tree, a material that has adorned imperial courts and scholar's studios for over 8,000 years. Each gourd is built up in dozens of thin layers of natural lacquer, then finished in the chìbǎoshā (赤宝砂,"red treasure sand") technique: crushed mineral particles are pressed into the final lacquer layers and polished by hand until the surface glows like cinnabar set with scattered flecks of light. No two pieces are ever exactly alike.
The natural dried gourd stem is preserved and gilded in warm gold — a hand-finished detail that lets the piece feel alive, like it was just gathered from the vine.
Rest it on your desk as a paperweight. Set it on a shelf beside your books. Place it on an altar or a nightstand. It holds still on your palm and catches the light differently throughout the day — a small daily reminder that good things take time.
